I crushed my interview.

I'm excited to join this company.

Everyone on the team seemed so good.

The CEO is fantastic.

The perks look good.

The latest Macbook.

It's all remote.

I can even work from Hawaii.

I can't wait to get started.

*New Email*

OFFER LETTER!!

*Quickly Scrolling down to check the salary*

6-figures. LETS GOO!!

I'm 23..

I'm making so much money.

New Nike. Check.

Vacation to Hawaii. Check.

My own fancy apartment. Check.

Cool work setup. Check.

Baller Lifestyle. CHECK.

Wait, don't get too excited. You gotta act humble.

DON'T BRAG.

You don't wanna look like a douchebag.

Especially in front of people you know who aren't making that kind of money. Be humble.

I make way more than most of my friends.

Act like you don't care.

Money isn't everything.

Yea. Money is good.

But focus on talking more about the work.

I gotta look intellectual.

I love my work.

But, I think now I also feel pressured.

I gotta work even harder now.

I gotta justify to my team that I'm worth this.

Oh man. There's so much legal stuff to do.

What the hell is a TD1 form.

I gotta get sh*t done.

Let me sign this offer letter and get it out of the way.

*a voice in the back of my mind*

Should I negotiate?

NO.

They already offered me way above my expectation.

I shouldn't be greedy.

Right?

But wait, I wanna try. If they offered me this, what would I get if I negotiate.

I have to ask.

Voah.

This is gonna be really awkward.

I have no idea how what to say.

I don't wanna mess up the working relationship with my boss.

I don't want him to think I'm money-minded.

I don't want him to think that I'll switch jobs for 10% more salary.

Okay.

I'll be as respectful as possible.

This is definitely gonna be awkward.

Should I negotiate over phone, over email or over slack. What's the right way to do it.

I gotta present myself as if I'm worth it.

I also don't wanna be cringy. My boss probably have had too many salary negotiation calls.

Should I wing it?

NO. Just research and do it.

Alright. Let's do the work then.

I'll not sign this offer letter right now.

I'll first schedule a call with my recruiter.

I don't wanna look like an enemy who's attacking, rather a friend who wants to contribute more and is asking to be valued fairly.

That's a lot of overthinking.

Let's get to work.

--

These thoughts were running through my mind when I got my offer letter.

I did go for the negotiation.

I did spend hours researching & planning my script.

I did get the $20,000 bump.

Let me help you negotiate too.

What you get?

3 one-hour calls

The Confidence.

The Script.

The confidence and the script to navigate the counter offer.

After purchase, I will reach out to you via email to schedule call.

I think we did it.

I worked hard.

Creativity was oozing out of me.

I improved my work by 10x to impress my boss.

Negotiating my salary was the most awkward 30 mins conversation I had with my boss.

But it was worth it.

I increased my salary by $20K.

I learnt that you have to do it respectfully.

You get a reality check on how much your manager believes in you.

If you don't end up getting what you want, at least your boss now thinks of you as a high performer, who believe in their worth.

4 things will happen:

  • Your boss straight up says "No".
  • Your boss happily says "Yes". However, if someone happily agrees to your number, you valued yourself too low.
  • Your boss agrees to meet you halfway - between your current and your expected number.
  • Your boss lays out an x-month plan. If you hit this specific target and perform these key activities, you get a raise.

If you go for negotiation, there's a 75% chance that you will get a raise.

Even in the straight-up "No" scenario, that no doesn't mean never.
